We put out a request for any "early years" award winners which may have been lost over the years. A special thank you to "Charles" who recently sent this e-mail with award info previously unknown to us:

In response to your appeal regarding prior year awards, here's some information regarding awards given for gay films, performers, and directors. I don't know if you'll want to include this on your website as these are awards that are no longer given, but here's the information, nonetheless. Good luck with your search for the other information.

The information is from the 1999 Adam Gay Video Directory, Knight Publishing Corporation.

"Primarily composed of journalists for straight publications, the XRCO included a gay awards section in its Valentine's Day shows for six years. This section was discontinued after 1989 as gay interest in this show gradually withered and a sufficient number of gay critics and reviewers could not be assembled to maintain a presence. Best Actor awards were given for work during the year rather than for a specific production."

THANKS TO MULTIPLE XRCO AWARD-WINNER COLLEEN BRENNAN FOR THIS FUN & INFORMATIVE E-MAIL:

Subject: Back in the old days we had to sand our own hearts.

Dear Mr. Bob, I understand the XRCO is hoping to identify pre-'93 winners. My hearts say:

Best Supporting Actress 1986, Colleen Brennan, Star Angel.
XRCO 1988 Hall of Fame, Colleen Brennan
And the little one just says," Thanxxxx to Colleen Brennan 1988"
(attachments are photos of the primitive hearts awarded in the era of porn predating the Great Mutating Cootie Pandemic of '93 that wiped pubic hair off the face of, ---oh drop it, Colleen, before you hear yourself testing out loud, "Ron Jeremy?" "John Leslie?"

I read about the origin of the hearts being the association with Valentine's day. I'm pretty sure that the untold half of that story has to do with the first year's event budget being somewhere in the neighborhood of six, eight dollars. More than likely Jim Dawson had some wood leaning against his stove and Margold was allowed to use a saw back then. Had to keep it simple, no one was willing to whittle a whole pile of buxom little lip-licking Pornettes.

My contribution to the first XRCO awards was introducing the guys to my friend, Bill Gazzarri. He was happy to have us, and the the XRCO kept the party there for several more years. I hosted a couple of the first ones, once with Ron Jeremy and once solo. Nina Hartley was among the first, if not the very first heart-on girl.

Damn, people, I figured you'd at least have the museum that would eventually house my trophy collection in it's planning stage. Come to find out you didn't even keep a copy of the program! My god, how will you devastate me next? Is someone going to tell me that Jared is no longer the cute young dude of the XRCO?

All the best,
------ -----,
AKA Colleen Brennan
